LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – People from all over the world are coming to Lexington for Keeneland’s 76th September Yearling Sale.
It is the world’s largest sale of thoroughbred racing prospects.
Last year, they had record-breaking sales during the September sale.
Keeneland Vice President of racing and sales Bob Elliston says Lexington is known for its horses and this sale is quite the testament to that.
“This is pure capitalism, this is an auction, this is enthusiasm. Million-dollar horses, last year I think we sold $27 million horses. These are just babies, one-year-old horses, so when you see that kind of action and you see the bidding and the beauty of the animal it really is quite fun,” Elliston said.
He said starting Monday, the first three days of the September sale make up the premier book 1 with a total of 569 yearlings in the catalog.
Thursday will be an off day for the sales but it will resume on Friday for book 2 with a total of 730 horses cataloged.
He is hoping for another successful year.
