Lexington, Ky. (WTVQ)-Monday night, a Winburn Middle School teacher gathered her community to honor her former student Amya Catching. A drive-by shooting paralyzed Catching in June during her birthday sleepover.
“Each day, through the summer we were just thankful we woke up together instead of on the other side of the ground,” Katherine Hunter, Amya’s Mother, said.
Now, summer is over, and it is time to move forward in style. A crowd packed into the STEAM Academy to give Amya a twelfth birthday do over.
Dancers and singers performed for Amya as she sat on a red carpet. Gift after gift came from the community. Amya even got an official proclamation from the mayor, declaring September 18th “Amya Catching Day”.
Catching says the support from the community makes her happy and thankful.
The birthday party was also a fundraiser. If you would like to help the Catching family pay Amya’s medical bills you can donate to her fund at Central Bank.
