Standoff ends in arrest in Somerset

Jonathan Toby Whiles
SOMERSET, Ky. (WTVQ) – A standoff with police that began Monday evening came to an end early Tuesday with the arrest of 31-year-old Jonathan Toby Whiles of Science Hill, according to Somerset police.

Officers say they were searching for Whiles after he reportedly threatened a Somerset police officer Sunday night while being investigated on a separate incident.  Investigators say Whiles went to a friend’s home just before 5:00 p.m. Monday.  When officers arrived, the friends left the home, but Whiles remained inside.

Somerset police hostage negotiators, along with deputies from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, began talking with Whiles in an attempt to get him to surrender peacefully.  Whiles would not come out, and at around 8:00 p.m., officers say they saw Whiles was armed with a handgun.

Negotiations continued until around 1:30 a.m., according to police, when a chemical munition was shot into the home in an effort to force Whiles out.  Whiles remained in the home despite the munition.  Finally, officers say around 3:45 a.m. a team of police entered the home, and found him barricaded in an upstairs bathroom.  Whiles reportedly resisted officers
when they tried to handcuff him, and officers say they ended up having to use a taser to get him under control.

The investigation is continuing and further criminal charges are pending.
